The Notable Woman is proud to present the Super U Summit, 30 empowering women speakers over 10 days.

In this Super U Summit Talk, I have the the pleasure of interviewing Heather Nadine Mackin on disparities in education.

Heather is a higher education lecturer. She has over 15 years of experience working with children with developmental delays and learning disabilities, working on public policy and educational justice for children and girls abroad and in the United States, small NGOs, and over 10 years of experience working with the NYC DOE.

Most importantly, Heather is a mother of a child with life-threatening food allergies and she personally understands the struggles that families go through finding safe and appropriate educational and community spaces and events for their children.

She aims to empower and advocate for special needs, children of color, and children of diverse linguistic backgrounds. Heather’s goal is to ensure children have a safe and appropriate educational, and extracurricular, environment. She assists families with getting evaluations and with the creation and implementation of IFSPs, IEPS, and 504 Plans for children with food allergies.

Heather also provides private consulting to businesses and organizations to ensure that community events and spaces are inclusive for children and adults with special needs, developmental delays, and food allergies.

In this interview, Heather and I talk about the disparity in education, specifically related to race, gender, and culture. We discuss a study done by Yale University: Do Early Educators’ Implicit Biases Regarding Sex and Race Relate to Behavior Expectations and Recommendations of Preschool Expulsions and Suspensions? We also talk about practical ways parents and teachers can make changes.
